In this project, students begin by researching three artists; Christopher Nevinson, Henri Moore and Paul Nash. These artists included meaning in their artwork relating to war. For this project, students will create their own pieces of Propaganda Art on an issue that they feel strongly about eg. animal rights or football hooliganism. They will note some initial ideas in their sketchbook in the form of a mind map.
Week 1 & 2
Classwork: Do a high quality A4 painting of one of your researched images.
Homework: Write about one of the artists including what, how and why they work. Research the artists’ technique. Produce a guide showing and explaining the different stages of one of the artists’ technique. Write about form, tone, colour, texture and composition in your sketchbook.
Week 3 & 4
Classwork (controlled conditions): Produce an observational painting (portrait, still life or landscape) from life inspired by one of your 3 artists.
Homework: Write about another of the artists including what, how and why they work. Research the artists’ technique. Produce a guide showing and explaining the different stages of one of the artists’ technique. Write about form, tone, colour, texture and composition in your sketchbook.
Classwork: Lecture on how to analyse an artwork. Apply what you have learn in the lecture to your third artists’ picture. Write about how your two artists styles and similar and different.
Homework: Be inspired by the themes of your chosen artist to produce a set of photographs and glue them into your sketchbook. Make notes on what, how and why you took them.
Classwork: Edit these photos in Photoshop to be creative and enhance the images. Stick your best 4 in your sketchbook (and screen grabs if possible) to show evidence of your editing. Make notes on how you edited them and what effect this has on the image.
Classwork: Based on your photos (and any other images from your sketchbook) as a start point, produce 3 good quality pen sketches showing possible ideas for final pieces. Your final pieces will eventually be completed in the style of one of your chosen artists. Start with pencil first if you wish.
Homework: Finish these pen drawings and choose the best one.
Classwork: Produce a detailed practice section of one your final piece using the techniques you will use in your final pieces. Make any last minute adjustments to your ideas and techniques and ensure you have practised and perfected techniques in your sketchbook.
Homework: Research 2 pages of images and notes on an issue that is important to you. Pick images that may be suitable for use in a final piece. See below for further details. The theme behind the final pieces will be to you but must be a subject you feel strongly about. Artists are passionate about their work and express their beliefs and thoughts through their artwork. This is a chance for you to produce art in this way. Past students have worked on themes such as global warming, racism, war , eating disorders, religious beliefs, fox hunting, third world poverty etc. If you have no opinions or beliefs on any of these sorts of things then look at what you are interested in and think about some issues relating to these.
Classwork: Write a detailed evaluation of your final piece and go back over your sketchbook pages evaluating the pros and cons of each different technique you have used. Find spaces around your work to write these evaluations.
Homework. 1 Next week we will be printmaking- this is what you will need: Bring in A4 black and white printouts of 2 images on your chosen theme AND bring in A4 black and white printouts of 2 images by your chosen artist.
Classwork: Produce tonal monoprints of at least 2 of your 4 chosen images.
Homework: Think about your chosen theme and use this to inspire a set of photographs. Edit these photos to be creative and enhance the images. Stick your best 4 in your sketchbook as well as some screen grabs to show evidence of your editing.
Classwork: Controlled conditions session – Stick in prints and write a step by step guide of the techniques used, include comments on how well your prints turned out.
Homework: Start to sketch ideas for a final piece that combines your chosen idea with your chosen artist’s style. You need two good ideas that combine our chosen theme and style. Spend time on making them look good and evaluate both.
Classwork: Produce a detailed practice section of your chosen idea. Make notes on pros and cons. Refine and combine media and materials. Practise ideas in different media and materials.
Homework: Bring in materials for final pieces.
Classwork: Finalise your ideas and approaches with your teacher. Start working on your final pieces.
Homework: Produce 1 or 2 pages showing different approaches to colour that you could use in your final piece.
Week 14 onwards (to end of Summer Holidays)
Classwork: Continue with final pieces.
Summer Homework: Finish final pieces and sketchbook, carefully checking back over the project brief. You should also photograph your final piece, glue in into your sketchbook and evaluate it writing on form, tone, colour and composition.
