In addition the library is open immediately at the end of the school day on Thursdays for parents to come and
browse the shelves or speak to library staff about any reading queries. We have sets of books available for families
to borrow to enable sharing and discussion of books at home too.
Our library is a very friendly, exciting, and vibrant area of the college. We place huge importance on reading for
pleasure and we have created a lovely soft informal seating area within the library space dedicated to reading.
Research has shown and we firmly believe our students who read for pleasure will be happier, healthier and have
better life outcomes. It is of course a great way to relax and unwind at the end of a busy day. Our library is also
staffed by a team of student librarians during break times which is a great volunteering opportunity for students.
Our library provision includes a superb range of fiction books, these are regularly updated. We ensure we have a
very good range of new titles throughout the year to attract and stimulate reading. We also stock a selection of
magazines, graphic novels, including manga style books and daily tabloid newspapers. Students also have access,
if they wish, to an e-book platform for those who prefer reading on an electronic device. Careers information is also
located in the library for students to access.
Students are able to use the library computers and have use of the printer for school work. To help our busy students
and parents/carers we have a small stationery shop in the library which sells all the basic equipment that students
need to support their study. This is a non-profit making and costs are minimal. Payments are small can only be made
in cash over the library counter. Purchases can be made at anytime during library opening times.
During the school year there will be many events, competitions, and clubs to join plus other activities happening in
the library throughout the school year. These will be advertised on Parentmail and daily notices as they come around.
The Library Manager, Mrs Shield will normally be available during parent consultation evenings with recommended
reading lists and an opportunity to talk about any reading queries. We have sets of books available for families to
borrow to enable sharing and discussion of books at home too.
Should you have any questions regarding reading, Mrs Shield is always delighted to be contacted by email at any
time to help. eshield@chesterton.cambs.sch.uk
