Rainbow Flag Award

The Rainbow Flag Award is a national quality assurance framework for primary schools, secondary schools, SEND schools and colleges. The award focuses on positive LGBT+, (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, plus other related identities), inclusion and visibility.

The Rainbow Flag Award encourages a whole organisation approach to LGBT+ inclusion, as well as developing strategies to effectively challenge and combat LGBTphobic* bullying.

Chesterton has committed to to the Rainbow Flag Award and we are therefore committed to improving the lives of all the young people that we work with, as well as the LGBT+ young people in our care, those from LGBT+ families, and LGBT+ staff members.

*The term “LGBTphobic” is used purposefully, to ensure that the experiences of all LGBT+ people are represented. The term “HBT bullying” (homophobic, biphobic and transphobic) may also be heard.

Since September 2019, we have earned the above four badges. Full feedback will be published once the Award has been secured, we hope this will be in September 2020.

We are currently working towards our final two badges (see below). If you would like to be involved in any way, please contact Daniela Martinelli (
