Week ending September 26th

  • We held another parent information evening this week, this time for Year 10 parents and students explaining how to have a successful start to GCSE study. It was good to see so many parents there, able to hear advice about supporting their child through the rigours of GCSEs.
  • This week all Year 8 students attended an interactive theatre presentation called ‘Choose Reuse’ organised by Mrs Pointon for PSE.  The message of reusing and recycling rather than sending items to landfill was well received. Students were encouraged to go home and make sure their household is doing what it can. Please do encourage your children to sign up at the Choose Reuse website to show you are involved and enter the competition.
  • Congratulations to Emily Howland in Year 7 who has been selected for the England Under 14 Korfball squad following trials and a residential selection weekend in Kent last weekend.
  • Sixty year 11 students spent the afternoon at the University of Cambridge Cavendish Physics Laboratories.  In groups students attended six workshop/presentations highlighting careers that use physics.  These included researchers from the High Energy Particle Physics laboratories, engineers from Marshall Aerospace, civil engineers designing complex multibillion pound international projects working in small renewable energy research and development teams, computer scientists and medical physicists.  The overall impression was the diversity of challenging and rewarding careers that utilize physics skills.
  • Next week we have our Open Evening and we have already handed out three hundred letters to students who wish to volunteer to help on the evening. It is always delightful to see how many Chesterton students are willing to give up their own time to support school events and they are always great ambassadors for the school.
  • I thought it would be useful to give a quick update on where we are with our catering changes. This half-term we are working on the full transition to in-house catering. It has been great to see so many students enjoying the food and making really positive comments about the experience. Parents at our information evenings have enjoyed the refreshments provided by our chef and we hope to see further developments during the year.
  • We have welcomed our teacher training students this week, who have been observing lessons and attending training sessions delivered by our staff. Talking to them they have really enjoyed their first experience in a secondary school and have been impressed by the student learning they have seen.
  • Year 11 revision has already started in earnest with all Y11 students having small group workshops with members of the senior team. On Friday I held a session for ten students about how to develop note-taking skills and these sessions will be run by the senior team in the lead up to the mock exams and then revisited before the final exams.
  • Y7 parents please mention the Chesterton Challenge to your children, as this will be launched next week in assemblies.
